Description

This oil on board painting, executed in the manner of Willem de Kooning (Dutch-American, 1904–1997), depicts a distorted, expressionist visage rendered with thick, aggressive impasto in tones of charcoal, slate, and ochre. The work bears a red script signature "de Kooning" along the lower edge. The verso features large handwritten inscriptions in marker identifying the title as "SINISTER HEAD," the medium as "OIL," and the date as "10-11/90" (October 11, 1990). While the date corresponds to the artist's final years, the visceral, heavy-texture technique attempts to emulate his celebrated mid-century Abstract Expressionist style rather than the sparse, fluid aesthetic of his actual late period. Abstract Expressionism, New York School style, heavy impasto, decorative modernism, bearing signature, 1990 dated art, grotesque portrait, thick texture, manner of de Kooning.
