Description

An antique woodcut print representing a siege of a medieval town. The print is an illustration for Der Weisskunig, The White King, a chivalric novel written by Maximilian I, 1486–1519, Holy Roman Emperor. The novel was illustrated by the most prominent artists of the time, but the full edition of 251 illustrations appeared only in 1775. The lot is plate 105 from this edition, as indicated in the lower left. It was executed by Hans Burgkmair the Elder, 1473–1531, a German painter from Augsburg. Initials HB on the lower left. White mat. Collectible Northern Renaissance Graphic Art.
