The painting depicts a scene near the arched entrance to a stone stairway, a woman on horseback holds a small girl on her lap as a boy holds the horses head, a man stands ready to help her dismount as three dogs cluster by the horses legs. The group portrays Lord Francis Egerton afterwards the Earl of Ellesmere with his family and Landseers related painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1837. Signed, E. Landseer, lower left.
